Strategy Game!
In the middle of March, 2009, we gathered together eight homeschool boys to play a giant strategy game that we created. The board was over eleven feet wide, and had over 600 countries for the players to conquer! It was a total blast with all of the players trying to capture key areas! Unlike other similar strategy games, our players all played at the same time; so usually there were four different battles going on at the same time!
Here’s how we did it: We divided the players into two teams. Each team had one president who set the overall strategy. All of the other players on the team were the generals who were assigned to various regions. Each general had their own color armies. While the president had the overall strategy, each general had their own strategy of how they were going to accomplish their part. Both sides battled until both presidents called a ‘cease-fire’. Then we counted up the regions that they controlled, and issued reinforcements accordingly. Part of their strategy was how to use the limited reinforcements that they received.
Before each turn, I would draw three random Event Cards that might be anything from earthquakes, tornadoes, disease, to even good crops and medicine. These were applied to three random countries or regions. These cards were to throw an element of surprise into the team’s strategy and see how they would react and adjust their overall strategy to these setbacks. Just like life, we may face battles and unforeseen obstacles, but we need to keep pressing onward!
Besides examining strategy in general, this project also examines “What is your strategy?” What are you planning to accomplish for God and eternity? What steps are you working on to accomplish that goal? Various interviews throughout the video talk about the application and building of strategy and pre-planning skills.
